Heard From the People Who Live Here
The most honest picture of Cheun Fung comes from residents and their families. We have collected some of what they have shared with us.

A selection of feedback shared with us between May and June 2025.
Leung Yuk-lan
Resident · Mid-Levels
"I have been here eight months and I still look forward to Thursday opera afternoons. The staff never push you to do anything, which I appreciate. My daughter was worried I would be bored but that has not been the case."

Chan Wing-kei
Son of resident · Wan Chai
"My mother was reluctant to move anywhere. She is now playing mahjong twice a week and has mentioned the same two women by name in every call. That is more than we hoped for. Mei-lin made the whole process very straightforward for us."

Wong Tak-fai
Daughter of resident · Kowloon Tong
"The location is very convenient for visiting — I come twice a week and always find my father in the garden or the common room rather than in his room. The meals are good, which matters to him. My only wish is that the studio ran on Sundays too."

Ho Lai-ching
Cultural Studio member · Sheung Wan
"I joined the Cultural Studio after seeing it mentioned by a friend. I do not live at Cheun Fung — I come for the programme three mornings a week. The calligraphy instructor is patient and the sessions are calm. It is a good part of my week."

Ng Chun-wai
Resident · Robinson Road
"I moved here from my flat in Kennedy Town. Living alone had become less comfortable — not dangerous, just quiet. Now there are people around in a way that does not feel crowded. I sit in the garden most mornings and it suits me."

Kwok Man-ying
Niece of resident · Quarry Bay
"My aunt has been with the Companion Circles for four months now. She is not a full resident — she comes in four days a week and goes home in the evening. The team was flexible about setting that up and she finds it gives structure to her days without being too much."

A Closer Look at Three Stories
Each situation is different. These three show how the plans have fitted into different circumstances.
The Situation
A 78-year-old retired schoolteacher living alone in Sai Ying Pun. Her children were working long hours and she was spending most days without company. She was well and active but found the quiet increasingly difficult.
What Was Arranged
She began with the Cultural Studio plan, attending three mornings a week. After two months, she joined the Companion Circles as well. Six months later, her family arranged a full Residence Plan so she would have company in the evenings too.
How It Settled
She now leads the Thursday calligraphy group informally, drawing on her teaching background. Her son says she calls him less to say she is bored — which he considers a significant improvement.
"I did not want to move somewhere that felt like a waiting room. This does not feel like that."
The Situation
A couple in their early 80s. The husband had mild short-term memory difficulty and the wife was managing most daily tasks for both of them. She was tired and they both felt isolated in their flat.
What Was Arranged
Both moved into the Residence and Lifestyle Plan. The husband joined the Companion Circles and found the repetition of familiar faces and games reassuring. His wife joined the Cultural Studio and described having time to herself as something she had not realised she was missing.
How It Settled
Fourteen months on, both are well and settled. The wife has said she feels less worn down than she did in the flat. Their daughter visits weekly and says the change in both parents has been noticeable.
"My husband knows the people in his group by name. That matters to us more than I can explain."
The Situation
A 75-year-old man, recently retired after 40 years in the textile trade. His children had moved abroad and he found the transition from a structured working life to unstructured days difficult. He described himself as not knowing what to do with his time.
What Was Arranged
He started with the Companion Circles only. The mahjong sessions gave him somewhere to be on specific days, and the group gave him regular conversation. He has not moved to a full residence plan and prefers to maintain his own flat nearby.
How It Settled
He has been attending for a year. He brought a mahjong set from his own collection which the group now uses on Tuesdays. He says the investment of HK$960 a month is the easiest decision he makes.
"I have somewhere to be on Tuesday and Thursday. That sounds like a small thing but it is not."
